Support and Resources to Help Nonprofits “Change the World with Confidence”

Washington, D.C., May 8, 2012– Alliance for Justice, the leading expert in nonprofit advocacy law, today announced the launch of a new initiative to provide greater support and enhanced resources for nonprofit organizations seeking to have a policy impact in 2012 and beyond.

The new Bolder Advocacy initiative is a comprehensive approach to training and equipping nonprofits and foundations to be effective in their work by better understanding the laws and regulations governing organizations engaging in advocacy. Nonprofits engage in advocacy by educating the public and policy makers about key issues, attempting to influence legislation or government rules and regulations, litigating on public policy issues, and ensuring that underrepresented communities have a voice in the policy process.

The Bolder Advocacy initiative includes:

  • An online resource center at
  • In-person and online trainings on nonprofit advocacy
  • A technical assistance hotline
  • Advocacy on behalf of the nonprofit sector in legislative and regulatory matters
  • National leadership from AFJ on the direction of nonprofit advocacy

By providing these resources for the nonprofit community, Alliance for Justice hopes to empower nonprofits of all sizes to effectively and confidently advocate on behalf of their constituents and their causes. As public policy debates are increasingly dominated by wealthy and powerful special interests, it is more important than ever for nonprofit advocates to understand how best to influence decision-makers and serve their communities.

Throughout 2012, Bolder Advocacy will release several new legal guides for nonprofits and foundations, covering topics such as California state lobbying disclosure rules and best practices in nonprofit recordkeeping. Bolder Advocacy coaches will conduct training sessions on topics ranging from ballot measure advocacy to election-related activities for nonprofits. Many training sessions will also be available in Spanish.

In addition to direct assistance to nonprofits and foundations, Alliance for Justice will use the Bolder Advocacy initiative to enhance its ongoing effort to make sure the legal and political environment in which all advocates operate is fair, balanced and open. The Bolder Advocacy team will track legislation, respond to political and policy threats, and fight for the rights of nonprofits and foundations to advocate for themselves and the communities they serve.

The new website offers easy-to-understand and accessible tips and resources, answers to frequently asked questions, relevant policy analysis, a “Focus on Foundations” section to help foundations support advocacy organizations, and expert opinions on advocacy-related issues. will be the home for all Alliance for Justice’s past and future publications, fact sheets, state law resources, toolkits, case studies, videos, online tutorials, and tools, including an updated version of our popular Advocacy Capacity Tool.

Through the website, users will be able to personally connect with a Bolder Advocacy coach for one-on-one technical assistance and trainings. They will learn how their peers have used advocacy to advance their cause. And they will have access to tools that help measure and build capacity and evaluate achievements through advocacy–ensuring greater focus and impact. A frequently updated blog and social media presence will give Bolder Advocacy a platform for building relationships with nonprofits and for engaging in current debates about advocacy and the nonprofit sector.
